The term “moonshine” dates back to the 1500s. Still, the iteration we recognize today originated in 18th-century England, referring to the practice of making and distributing illicit spirits in secret, under the cover of darkness or the light of the moon, to avoid taxes and government bans. Traditionally, it refers to a highly potent, unaged whiskey made most commonly from a corn base. While historically produced illegally, today licensed commercial distilleries legally produce moonshine and offer it in a variety of flavored varieties, such as apple pie.
